Take screenshots on Mac

One overlay handles every still screenshot: drag for a region, click a window or display, or press a key to grab every screen. Captures are saved to your library as PNG files and copied to the clipboard.

From How
Any app Press ⌃⇧C, the global capture shortcut
The menu bar Click the SuperCapture icon, then Image Capture…
The gallery Click Capture, or open its menu and choose Capture Image
Inside SuperCapture ⇧⌘4 captures a region; ⇧⌘3 captures the screen

To change the global shortcut, open Settings → Keyboard, click the Global capture shortcut field and press a new combination.

When the overlay is open:

Capture What to do
Region Drag a rectangle.
Window Hover until the window is highlighted, then click. SuperCapture captures the whole window, even the parts covered by other windows.
One display Hover over an empty part of the desktop so the screen is highlighted, then click.
All displays Press Return. Every connected display is captured as one image.

While selecting, you can also use these keys:

Key Effect
W Switch between window mode and region mode
⇧ + drag Constrain the selection to a square
Space + drag Move the whole selection
⌥ + drag Drag without snapping to edges
Esc Cancel

The toolbar at the top of the display has:

  • Image, Video and Audio. Choose what the selection is for. Video opens the screen recorder with your selection already picked as the source. Audio opens audio recording.
  • The timer. Click it to cycle through No Delay, 3 seconds, 5 seconds and 10 seconds. With a delay set, a “Capture in” countdown appears before the shot. Use it to open a menu or hover state first.
  • ✕. Closes the overlay.

Press ⌃⇧R to capture the same region, window or screen as last time, with no overlay. If there’s nothing to repeat, the overlay opens instead. Rebind it under Settings → Keyboard → Repeat last capture shortcut.

Settings → Capture Filter controls what’s hidden from screenshots and recordings:

Setting Default
Hide wallpaper Off
Hide dock On
Hide desktop icons On
Allow capturing SuperCapture Off, so hovering picks the window behind SuperCapture’s own windows

These settings live under Settings → Capture:

  • After Capture chooses what comes forward after a screenshot taken from the menu bar:
    • Auto - gallery on multiple monitors (the default)
    • The full gallery
    • The compact window
    • Nothing - just a notification
  • Copy capture to clipboard is on by default. Don’t copy scrolling captures (they can be large) skips very tall images.
  • Naming sets the file name pattern. See File naming.

For Retina displays, Settings → Retina Display has two options: Reduce Retina captures to 1x on export and Add @2x suffix to full-resolution exports.

To capture a web page taller than the window, use the browser extension. If the extension reports that the page under the pointer can scroll, a Scrolling Capture button appears over the browser window in Image mode. Learn more about scrolling capture.

  • The overlay doesn’t appear, or captures come out blank. SuperCapture needs Screen Recording permission. Open Settings → General → Permissions and click Repair Screen Recording Permission, then grant it again. See Install.
  • The shortcut does nothing. If Settings → Keyboard says “Couldn’t register the saved shortcut - it may be in use by another app”, pick a different combination.
  • Clicking SuperCapture’s own window selects the window behind it. That’s the default. Turn on Allow capturing SuperCapture in Capture Filter.

Next: annotate the capture or search your library.
