Install SuperCapture on Mac

SuperCapture runs on macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later with Apple Silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs are not supported. The browser extensions are optional and need the Mac app installed first.

  1. Download the latest installer. It is a signed and notarized .pkg hosted in the public GitHub releases. Release notes for each version are on the releases page.

  2. Open the package and follow the installer. SuperCapture installs into your Applications folder. Keep it there: macOS lists an app under Privacy & Security reliably only when it lives in /Applications.

  3. Launch SuperCapture. It runs as a menu bar app, and the main window starts hidden. Click the SuperCapture icon in the menu bar to reach Capture, Gallery and Reader, your three most recent captures, Image Capture…, Video Capture…, Audio Capture…, Settings… and Quit SuperCapture.

The first launch walks you through a short setup:

  1. Welcome to SuperCapture! A short overview video. Click Next.
  2. Choose Library Location. The folder where screenshots, recordings and annotations are saved. The default is ~/Pictures/SuperCapture. Click Choose Folder… to pick another, or change it later under Settings → General → Save Location.
  3. Set Up Permissions. Grant Screen Recording (see below). Show Keystrokes is optional.
  4. Download AI Models. About 200 MB of on-device models for features like background removal and auto-tagging. Click Download, or Skip and download them later.
Permission When it’s needed Required?
Screen Recording Every screenshot and screen recording Yes
Microphone Recording your voice with a screen or audio recording When you use a mic
Camera Adding your webcam to a screen recording When you use a camera
Input Monitoring Showing the keys you press as an overlay in a recording Optional

macOS asks for Microphone and Camera access the first time a recording uses them. Recording works without Input Monitoring. Only the keystroke overlay needs it.

  1. On the Screen Recording card, click Grant Access.

  2. In the macOS dialog, click Open System Settings.

  3. Turn on SuperCapture.app in the list.

  4. When prompted, click Quit & Reopen. The card shows All set once access is detected.

The card keeps saying “Waiting for SuperCapture to be switched on…” If System Settings already shows SuperCapture switched on, click Quit & Reopen. If that doesn’t work, click Reset & Open Settings under Need a hand? and switch SuperCapture on again.

Captures stopped working after an update. Open Settings → General → Permissions and click Repair Screen Recording Permission. This clears the stale permission record so you can grant it again cleanly.

Reset it by hand. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, turn SuperCapture off, then on again. From Terminal, you can also run:

Terminal window
tccutil reset ScreenCapture io.supercapture.desktop

Then grant the permission again.

SuperCapture updates itself. When a new version is available, the menu bar menu offers it. The Auto-update tab in Settings controls when updates install.
