Where SuperCapture differs

No Desktop clutter, and no lost work. SuperCapture files every screenshot and recording into its library, in the folder you’re looking at, and reads the text in each one on your Mac. Months later you type a word you remember from it, an error code, a customer’s name, a headline, and it’s there, ready to edit or share from the same window. CleanShot X users typically find their Desktop cluttered with screenshots they can’t easily recall for future work: each capture is saved as a date-stamped file, and its capture history reaches back only a month.

Built for a team’s captures, not one-off links. Shared folders are how a team passes work around. Marketing drops campaign screenshots and product shots into one folder, support keeps its how-to recordings and annotated fixes in another, and colleagues and collaborators see each new capture as soon as it’s filed, synced to their Mac, searchable by its text and open for comments. With Pro for teams, those folders make up your organization’s own library: switch to the organization and every capture you take is filed there, admins manage who’s in it from the web, and it can be stored in your own S3-compatible bucket. CleanShot Cloud is built around sending a link to each capture; its team plan adds administration, single sign-on and custom domains around those links.

Every capture named for what’s in it. AI Rename looks at each new screenshot, recording and import on your Mac and names the file for its content, so a folder reads like a list of what’s in it, not a column of timestamps. Names follow a template you can edit in Settings, so every file can start with the date, a project prefix or whatever your team uses, with the AI’s description filling in the rest. AI Rename needs macOS 27 or later; the template works everywhere.

Work on many captures at once. Select a group of captures and act on all of them together: tag them, rename them with a name pattern, drag them into a folder, share or copy them, combine them into a slide deck, or move them to the Trash. Search narrows the library to exactly the set you want first, so reorganizing a project’s worth of screenshots takes seconds.

A library you can search. SuperCapture treats captures as a library you keep, not files you send and forget. OCR runs on every capture on your Mac, so you can find an old screenshot by an error code or a merchant name. You can also narrow results by tag or type, or by color with a hex value or a color name. Bookmarks you can read offline. Save a web page from the browser extension and SuperCapture keeps its article text alongside a picture of it, and on Reddit, Hacker News and Discourse forums, the post and its comment thread too. Reader mode shows them as clean, readable pages, stored on your Mac, so they’re there offline and searchable with the rest of your library.

Browser extensions. The Safari, Chrome, Brave and Firefox extensions capture a full web page by scrolling and stitching it. They can also step through web-based slide decks and save images or bookmarks into your library. Get the extensions.

Automation for AI agents. SuperCapture runs a local MCP server with more than 150 tools. An AI client can search and tag your gallery, add annotations, start and stop recordings, and export results. CleanShot X offers a URL scheme for triggering captures and app actions. That suits shortcuts and launchers, but it’s a different kind of integration.

Zero-knowledge encryption. On Pro, capture files can be encrypted on your Mac before upload, so the service stores only an encrypted copy. CleanShot’s security page describes encryption at rest and in transit with AWS KMS, which is a different model. SuperCapture’s encryption covers capture files, not account or sync metadata. Local by default. You don’t need an account to capture, organize or search. Pro for teams can also keep new captures in your own S3-compatible storage.

When CleanShot X might fit instead

• Your Mac runs macOS 13 or 14. SuperCapture requires macOS 15 or later and an Apple Silicon Mac, so it won’t run on Intel models. CleanShot X requires macOS 13 or newer, and its FAQ lists the last versions that supported older macOS releases.
• You prefer paying once. CleanShot Basic is a one-time purchase that includes a year of updates, and since version 5.0 that includes Studio Mode’s video editor. SuperCapture’s paid plans are annual subscriptions, though its free plan covers every capture, editing and search tool.
• You need scrolling capture outside a browser. CleanShot X includes scrolling capture in the app. SuperCapture’s full-page capture works through its browser extensions.
• You already use Setapp. CleanShot X is included in a Setapp subscription.

Switching tips

1. Clear your Desktop into SuperCapture. Drag the screenshots and recordings piled up on your Desktop into the SuperCapture window. They’re filed into your library, their text is read, and from then on they’re searchable like everything you capture next.
2. Install a browser extension if you capture long web pages. Get the extensions.
